A Guide to Wood Science
The Biological research of wood and it’s renewable material is what is referred to as wood science. Wood technology is now the way the tools are utilized in the processes of wood preservation. Other products are put alongside wood for easy testing and study. The comparison made against other products will include the features of the material against those of wood, the value and the ease it can be worked on. Wood has many advantages and this technology takes the advantages and utilizes them. Some of these advantages include wood being a versatile material that can be used in a wide range of products. Wood is renewable, and this makes it more precious. Timber can be utilized in very many applications, and this makes it more valuable.
The good appearance of your timber made structure cannot be guaranteed if protection of the timber is not done. Wooden structures have to be kept away from water and pests that eat through the wood. The water particles in the timber increase the rotting and the insects bore through the wood. Many methods are available in the treatment of wood one of the most common being the ACQ – alkaline copper Quaternary. This is a copper-based preservative that is applied to the wood for protection. As effective as this preservative, it has some downside to its use. It is a highly corrosive chemical that affects most metals that are used together with the wooden products. The species of the wood and the application of the wood will determine how many chemicals will be used on the wood. The concentration level of the chemical will be different for two pieces of wood where one is used above ground and the other close to a water body.
Many methods are being invented to protect the wood, and one of them is the copper metal method. This method is being accepted fast because is friendly to wooden fasteners. An alternative name to be given to this method is the micronized copper wood preservative method. In this process microscopic particles of solid copper metal are mixed in a liquid carrier and injected to the wood at high pressure. The difference between this method and the other copper-based methods is that the copper is used as a metal rather than a dissolved material. The characteristics of the wood are highly improved and the when this process is used to treat wood. The time the wood products treated using this method last is longer other types of treatment.
Termites cannot eat through timber treated through this method. It has also shown to be an improvement in corrosion resistant properties to metal fasteners. Extensive research over a period of 10 years has proven the effectiveness of this science as one of the best wood preservation methods.
